Narrowing the Gap
In BBC News (2005)” controversy blights UN net summit” by Twist, the author discusses the summit that has been hold in Tunis to narrowing the gap between rich and poor countries. In addition, he points out on the problems that the summit had about who should manage the net not to mention the freedom speech. Also, he shows that the funding allocated for this process in not enough. The author states that technology will push all nations toward the international aims in terms of technological development. Moreover, the author tells us about the tensions that happened during the summit. He also claims that internet requires to enormous efforts to combat crimes through internet, according to the Chinese Vice Premier. I agreed with the author that all countries should narrow the gap between them in order to prevent the crimes, provide the freedom and develop and help poor nations.
First of all, many terrorist groups are based in poor countries. That shows the importance of technological development in different ways to combat such groups. There are a lot of criminal groups who use the internet to transmit thier plans. According to Chinese Vice Premier, “ for the internet, we need effective measures to fight against criminal acts using this technology’ (2005, para.14). Thus, the development of poor countries and keep them at pace with the evolution of the world in this area may limit the ability of many criminal groups. Tech has become the first police officer in the fight against all kinds of crimes. For that all countries should help each other to stop terrorism by narrowing the technology gap.
Next, internet has become the real source of free speech that all can use without fear of censorship scissors. Thus, seriousness of the gap between countries appears here. People of developed countries can express their views through all forms, but their counterparts in poor countries have limited space for free speech. The freedom of speech is the right of everyone therefore the tension will rise in poor countries because of the lack of free speech. “But the summit was most notable for palpable tension during the events organized by civil society groups who called for action to balance the rights of all digital citizens in a global information society to freedom of expression” (2005, para 12). Therefore, the call for freedom of expression has become the demand of all people.
Finally, the world has become a small village. Therefore, the lack of keeping up with the world’s evolution in many poor countries may keep them always in the back row. Thus, assisting poor nations and exchanging information with them by developing their technological advice might help to promote them in all fields.”Technologies and knowledge would also drive all countries towards internationally-agreed development goals and objectives” (2005, para. 8).
In conclusion, freedom of expression, the fight against crime and technological development in poor countries are the soldiers of the same coin. Developed countries should help other countries to put them in right path of the modern technology. It is everyone’s right to have the same freedom and the same technology.
